Kalaripayattu the ancient martial art


Introduction  :- Kalaripayattu is one of the most ancient form of martial art. It is very much attractive form of martial art. This martial art is also known as mother of all martial art. Kalaripayattu is basically belongs to Kerala from India. This martial art is the traditional and one of the great art of Kerala. The word 'kalari' means is 'battlefield' in malayalam( regional language of kerala). There are lots of athlete who use to practice this art for fitness in their daily life. It is a excellent combination of technique, steps, postures and discipline. In this martial art there are many posture and skill is inspired by some animals skill.



History :-     It is probably believed that kalaripayattu is the oldest martial art of India. According to Hindu religious book and many expert of this art is known that kalaripayattu found by God Parshuram. Parshuram created forty-two kalaris(schools) and trained twenty-one masters to protect the land of Kerala from the enemy.  


 A great Buddhist monk Bodhi Dharma was a great kalaripayattu expert. He belongs to south India.He was master of this art and meditation. Bodhi dharma was also a great master ayurved. He travelled to China , where he introduced kalaripayattu to other monks. Later on by some local innovation judo, karate, kung-fu martial art was developed. That's why it is known that Kalaripayattu is mother of all martial arts.



Training of kalaripayattu :-    

(1) Maithari :-  A student begins his kalari training with  the Maithari. Maithari is basically a stage in which the students are trained for body exercise. In any martial art, strength and flexibility is very much needed. In this stage student learns various kind of stretching exercise and some postures  like Gaja vadivu( elephant pose), Aswa vadivu( horse pose), Sinha vadivu(lion pose).

(2) Kolthari :-  It is the second stage of kalaripayattu training. In this stage students are getting ready to use wooden weapons. Basically the range of the wooden weapons is 1.5 feet to 6 feet. 

(3)Ankathari : It is the third stage of the training of kalaripayattu. In this stage students are trained for metallic weapon. It is very important stage where they  learn how to fight with metallic weapons without any injury on their own body.

(4) Verum kai Prayogam :-  A person should always be alert for any type of attack. In this stage they learn how to protect yourself with or without weapon. They learn many types of fighting skills without any weapons including punches, strikes and body lock technique.

(5) Marma Treatment :- The masters of kalaripayattu formed a traditional treatment system with the help of ayurveda. Any person who get injured at any moment,  then they can give a good treatment to their own body and get recover from injury.
